The Best Summer Treats in Louisville

Now that Memorial Day has passed and summer has unofficially started, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to beat the Louisville summer heat. Maybe you like a quick dip in a pool or to camp out in a heavily air conditioned building. For me, the best way to cool down is with something sweet and something cold.

I’ve spent the past few weeks sampling frozen treats around Louisville, and I’ve come up with a list of the five best places in town to cool you down and satisfy your sweet tooth.

Joella’s vs Royals: The Louisville Hot Chicken Showdown

Nashville style hot chicken is having a bit of a moment right now in Louisville. It’s a simple dish- fried chicken covered in a fiery paste sat atop a piece of white bread- but it’s one that will have you remembering it (and the face sweats you had while eating it) for days.

While hot chicken may be a relatively new craze in Louisville, it’s nothing new to our neighbors 175 miles south where the dish originated over 70 years ago. The story goes that Thornton Prince’s wife wanted to get back at him for bad behavior and gave his Sunday chicken a spicy kick.
